About England

England is the larger and most populous region in Great Britain and the UK. It contains about 84% of the UK population and, with its 49 millions of inhabitants, it is also the nation which contains the greater variety of ethnic groups.
The total area of England is 130,410 sq Km and it is mainly hilly in nature and no place there is more than 75 miles (120 Km) from the sea. The proximity to the Atlantic Ocean gives to England a varied and temperate climate, with temperatures that are not much lower than 0°C in winter and not much higher than 32°C during summer. It is for this reason that England is predominately full of green lands which offer a sweet, cozy nature and a great variety of flowers and perfumes, especially during springtime.

England is the country of contradiction: it sets the secular calm and cult for the most conservative traditions against the dynamism of London with its wide multiculturalism and the infinite chances of career. You can choose to visit the English villages and go back in time, or walk around the streets of London (chieftown and political capital of the Kingdom) to discover the many surprises that this city is able to offer to its visitors.

England is famous for its castles and historic houses showing its long history and for its cultural tradition, which covers different fields: literature - whose main representative is William Shakespeare - music - with wordwide known popstars like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Queen - legends such as Robin Hood and the first parliament in the world, which was established in the 13th century.

Moreover, England is famous for "Fish and Chips" (the typical English dish) and for its pubs (public houses). These establishments are an important part of British life, through the opportunities they provide as social meeting places.

Last but not least, England is the homeland of the English language. The main language spoken here is British English, as distinct from American or Australian English.
