Dublin is the Republic of Ireland's principle city, the largest and most populated town in the isle and one of the fastest growing European cities both from an economic and a urban point of view.
It is located near the midpoint of Ireland's east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey and at the centre of the Dublin Region. In the North you can find shopping centres and big civil memorials while in the South, the most ancient monuments, part of the medieval city, universities and the beautiful Georgian houses recalling the aristocratic past of the town. Anyway animation is vibrant all around the city, at North near to the main commercial ways such as Talbot Street and Henry Street, and at South where you will find a more sophisticated and younger atmosphere.
Setting of the James Joyce's "Dubliners" and "Ulysses", Dublin is one of the major centres for the Irish culture, and it finds in the old Temple Bar quarter the heart of its nightlife. During the weekends you will see even people from Great Britain coming here just to visit this typical quarter and look up to the many street artists performances.
The city hosts the National Print Museum of Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Ireland, the Chester Beatty Library and the National Museum of Ireland. It is also the major Irish education centre, with three important universities: the University of Dublin (the most ancient university in Ireland), the National University of Ireland (the biggest in the country) and the younger Dublin City University.
This is also the focal point for much of Irish Art and Irish artistic scene. There are several theatres within the city centre and the biggest libraries and literary museums are found there.
But, if you decide to go to study in Dublin, remember that Dubliners (the residents here) represent the most important resource of the city, people who even Sigmud Freud in the past was unable to undertsand and analize, due to their wild and creative imagination. Just think about the dark, gothic scenery presented by Bram Stoker in his famous work: "Dracula". Dublin is the birthplace of many prominent literary figures, writers such as James Joyce and Oscar Wilde, that you can find in any urban corner, immortalized in sculptures located everywhere in the city.
Dubliners are very nice, friendly and special people, who love to spend their free time by attending greyhound races or drinking a Guinness in isolated pubs, out from the arterial streets. These are really interesting places to visit, next to the narrow streets, lanes, facades and idle areas located throughout the city.
It is for all these reasons that study English in Dublin can turn into a new and exciting way to enter in touch with this vibrant European capital, with its tradition, with its past and present culture and way of life. In addition, it is reputedly one of the most youthful cities in Europe, with 50% of inhabitants being younger than 25. One more reason for young foreign students, to choose the Irish capital as an ideal place for studying English.
Dublin is also the heart of the Irish transport network. The main port and the main airport of the isle are located here; it has a good roads network and an efficient public transport network.
