Moscow today is the political and economic capital of Russia. With 11 million inhabitants, it is still the largest city in Europe.
While those who lost out in social reforms are easy to spot in other areas of the country, in Moscow everybody seems to be a winner, or aspiring to be one at least. Moscow is the New York of Russia, a city that never sleeps and where everything is possible. Moscow is the melting pot of a collapsed empire, a mix of European and Asian.
Skyscrapers sprout up from the ground, the city centre is being ruthlessly renovated and new temples of consumerism open their doors daily.
But there is another Moscow, away from Sadovoye Koltso (Garden Ring) and the Kremlin. Cosy cafes, narrow alleys, hidden artists’ studios and idyllic parks are as much a part of the cityscape as the gigantic wedding-cake buildings of Stalin’s era, the expensive fashion stores and McDonalds.
Moscow is a monster, but a lovable monster that is always worth visiting. Climate: Moscow lies on approximately the same latitude as Edinburgh in Scotland, but due to its location far from the sea and in the midst of a large continental landmass, the Russian capital's climate is considerably more extreme. Summers are hot and winters very cold by Western European standards.
Temperatures range from +22-28 °C degrees during August to -10 °C or even -20 °C during January, usually the coldest month of the year.
